ELCA International Disaster Response
Myanmar Cyclone, World Food Crisis

May 2008. Tropical Cyclone Nargis lashed Myanmar, followed by a tidal surge. Over 20,000 people are reported dead; many thousands more are missing.  Whole villages have been decimated, and the storm destroyed roads and other essential infrastructures.
Those who struggle the most to recover are those who were already vulnerable.  Of special concern are the hard-hit impoverished communities around the capital and in the rural coastal areas. The million people made homeless by the storm likely have lost their livelihood, too.  Please pray for those struggling to recover from this disaster and for disaster workers struggling to respond in a challenging context.  Your gifts to ELCA International Disaster Response will provide emergency aid and fund a long-term response to assist in recovery efforts.

World Food Crisis. High energy costs, drought, flooding in agricultural regions, and increasing use of grain in biofuels have combined to create a global crisis of rising food costs.  Amplified by political, economic, and environmental challenges, this crisis has reached disaster status for many communities.
“Given predictions that food prices will continue to rise, we are particularly concerned about those who are the most vulnerable, including those who live on a dollar or less each day, those who are refugees, and those who are dependent on others to provide food and shelter,” said the Rev. Rafael Malpica Padilla, executive director, ELCA Global Mission.
Your prayers and donations are urgently needed.  Gifts to ELCA International Disaster Response will augment ongoing sustainable development work through ELCA World Hunger and will be used to fund emergency aid provided through disaster partners.
